mIRC above can be installed simply by downloading the linked application file. Save it to your disk and then launch it by double-clicking it, or typing its name in a DOS box. This application will then install itself by asking you some questions.
Visual IRC requires WinZip or PKZIP / PKUNZIP in order to unpack the file. If you have this and can unpack it, run the extracted SETUP.EXE, which will then lead you through the installation.

For background information, get onto your favorite searchsite (like AltaVista or Yahoo, and search for "introduction to IRC" or "Internet Relay Chat". The recommended IRC server is "irc.ncal.verio.com". Once there, the SSA channel we've been using is #SSA. The next recommended meeting time is Saturday 2/21, at 9:00pm California time.
